My T-shirt Design

Winning T-shirt Competition 2012

I was over the moon to win a T-shirt Competition during my time on the 2nd Year Extended Diploma course. The brief was to re-design the t-shirts for The White Water Centre, a local business specializing in white water rafting and canoeing. We visited the centre, met the clients and took photos of rafts going down the river. Using the photos I'd taken I sketched a simple canoe and scanned it onto the computer, I simplified the sketch and highlighted the outline of the canoe. I decided to make the design black or white, this meant that the design could be applied to any colour t-shirt, making it more versatile it also meant the clients themselves could choose what colour t-shirt the design would be printed on. Because of the basic colours of the design it also meant that the cost of printing a bulk of t-shirts would be much less than if the design was brightly coloured and extravagant. I believe being flexible with my design, enabling the company to choose the t-shirt colour and make changes to the design if they wish gave me that edge.

FMP Exhibition Space

I borrowed a spare wheel & an old wheel arch off a knackered Ford Focus to show exactly how my handprints were used to advertise the college Art Exhibition.

10. Golf GTI Guerilla Marketing

I love how this can be used by everyone, a bag can be used by men, women and children. The design on the front is brilliant, putting your arm through the handle creates the illusion that your arm is on the window of a Golf GTI, making it look as though you’re cruising about whilst shopping. Can imagine that this generated a few laughs!!

9. Planetarium Prague Guerilla Marketing

Fantastic way to advertise a planetarium. Using a revolving door and placing stickers showing the planets in the universe on the windows so that when the door spins it creates the effect that the planets are revolving around you is genius! I would definitely be impressed if I saw this when I walked into a building.

8. Phone theft Guerilla Advertising

Absolutely brilliant! Hard hitting and gets the point across effectively. This advertisement for phone theft in Romania used professional pick pockets to place these flyers inside the bags and pockets of unsuspecting people, proving that anybody can take your phone without you noticing. I love this idea and it instantly inspired me to go ahead and maybe one day create an advertisement that will inspire other people to do the same!

7. Tyskie Beer Guerilla Marketing

This campaign is so simple, yet so effective. By placing the pint glass behind the door handle it creates the illusion that you’re holding a beer when you open the door. I can imagine that this sparked hilarious reactions off people and quite a few tourists would have posed with the image I’m guessing. The fact it’s so simple is very appealing to me because I’m a strong believer that a simple design can be just as effective as an extravagant advertising campaign.

6. Duracell Guerilla Marketing

This is quite similar to my FMP project where I created handprints on clear plastic that I put on cars in the college car park to advertise the college Art Exhibition, let’s just say I got a variety of responses... However this campaign for Duracell uses the same method of putting designs on the side of vehicles, using a torch it creates the illusion that the torch is on. It’s very clever and would definitely catch the attention of passing motorists.

5. Shark Week Guerilla Marketing

I love the idea of creating advertising that people can pick up and look at. Something tangible that they can interact with and be amazed by. This campaign for Shark Week on the Discovery Channel does exactly that, a surfboard with a bite taken out of it instantly sceams SHARK ATTACK! It shoots fear into the heart of the person who finds the board and then leave them in awe when they realise it’s advertising. In my opinion this is a brilliant piece of advertising that is very imaginative.

4. Nikon Guerilla Marketing

This Guerrilla Advertising campaign for Nikon D700 is amazing! I love how it involves the public and literally makes them a star. With the huge photo of paparazzi on the wall and the magic touch of an actual red carpet it creates the illusion that a member of the public is a celebrity walking down the red carpet. Gives the impression that you’ll feel like a superstar in front of it and a professional holding it.

3. Gail Porter - FHM Guerilla Advertising stunt

When I first saw this I thought it was tasteless and tacky. However after studying Art & Design for almost 3 years, in my opinion this is a brilliant piece of Guerilla Advertising. During the 1990’s Gail Porter posed for several photo shoots for men’s magazines. One such shot where she is posing nude from behind was projected onto the Houses of Parliament with a slogan urging people to vote for her in the FHM 100 Sexiest Women Poll. The masterminds behind this stunt FHM, along with guerilla marketing company Cunning Communications and projectionist/artist Malcolm Litson and Jason Bridges created and iconic moment that inspired a brand new way of advertising.

2. RFK Assassination – Bill Eppridge

Haunting, is the only word I can think of to describe the series of photographs taken by Bill Eppridge after the senator was shot by Sirhan Sirhan. Kneeling next to RFK is 17 year old bus boy Juan Romero who was shaking the senators hand at the time of the shooting. In my opinion these photographs are incredibly harrowing and almost certainly show the senators last moments. I am highly moved by these stills and have the utmost respect for the photographer keeping a cool head in such an awful situation.

1. V-J Day – Alfred Eisenstaedt

This is my all time favourite piece of photography. This iconic photo is the most memorable photograph I have ever seen. Ask anybody, and they will have heard about or seen this photograph. The composition is perfect and you can feel the joy of the individuals celebrating beaming through the camera lens. I have this photograph in my bedroom and have often been asked about the story behind it, truth is, nobody is 100% sure! Several people have come forward claiming they are the strangers locked in an impromptu embrace. However, I prefer not knowing the true story behind this beautiful photograph, and leaving it to my imagination…
